Binghamton University Provost's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research
The Provost's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research honors Binghamton University students who have excelled in research, scholarship and creative activities that extend beyond traditional course work. Two awards are made, each consisting of a certificate of achievement and an award of $750. Students awarded Honorable Mention will receive a certificate of achievement. All recipients are invited to the annual student awards luncheon in the spring semester.
Students can also be nominated for the new SUNY Undergraduate Excellence in Research Award, with the same nomination packet. There is an earlier deadline to submit for the SUNY award. See this link for more information and details about the SUNY award
Student Eligibility Requirements
Any undergraduate at Binghamton University who is graduating during the current academic year and is in good academic standing is eligible.
Criteria for Nominated Students
The award honors excellence in faculty-mentored research and creative activities by undergraduate students that go beyond traditional coursework. These activities can be in any field; the nature of the endeavor is defined by the academic discipline. Binghamton University faculty must have supervised at least a portion of the research/creative activity.
Deadline to Submit Nominations
To be considered for both the SUNY Undergraduate Excellence in Research Award and the Provost's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate research, applications must be in by Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
To be considered for just the Provost's award, the nomination deadline is Wednesday, March 17, 2027.

Requirements for Nominations
- The unit's (school/department/program) undergraduate director or chair must make the nomination
- Each unit may nominate only two undergraduate students
- Nominees must be graduating seniors for the current academic year
Nomination Packets
There will be a new set of submission requirements for 2026-27 to reflect a new SUNY Undergraduate Excellence in Research Award.
Complete submissions must include:
- A brief letter of nomination from the unit/department
- A current résumé/CV
- Three letters of reference. One letter must be from the primary faculty mentor. The nomination letter may also serve as one of the letters of recommendation if the nominator has had substantive interactions with the nominee in any area of excellence and speaks to them directly in the letter.
- Supplemental Information (to be completed by the student nominee and reviewed by the
nominator)
- Title and one-paragraph abstract of the research or creative activity
- Description of the research or creative activity that includes the framing question, purpose/rationale/motivation, methodology, and findings (if the research is in progress, this may include preliminary findings)
- Relationship between the research or creative activity and the student’s academic studies and/or professional goals, with a focus on how the student intends to apply their learning to future pursuits
- Ways in which the student has shared (or plans to share) the findings of their research or creative activity
- Listing of other awards or recognitions the student has received for this and/or other research or creative activities
- Current resume for the student that includes current contact information
- Brief sample of the student’s research or creative activity
