Researchers across Binghamton University are working to discover and disseminate breakthrough innovations to help solve some of the most pressing environmental, economic and social challenges of sustainability, with the goal of improving lives.

Binghamton 2 Degrees
Climate change will alter all aspects of our lives in profound ways. Binghamton 2 Degrees is a campus-wide initiative to engage everyone in Binghamton University and the larger community on the central motivating question of: What will it mean to live in Binghamton under two degrees of warming, and what can we do now to prepare?
Transdisciplinary Areas of Excellence
The TAEs address critical social, scientific, technological, economic, cultural and policy issues that can best be addressed by teams of faculty employing the perspectives and methodologies of multiple disciplines. These are the featured TAE committees that encompass sustainability aspects into their research:
- Smart Energy
- The TAE Smart Energy area of excellence will build upon existing strengths in four key areas of alternative energy research: Solar and thermoelectric energy harvesting; Energy storage; Energy efficiency in electronic systems; Sensor development for energy resource management.
- Sustainable Communities
- By developing new paradigms and vital partnerships within the University and with community members and organizations, this area of excellence will help us understand what it takes to model, build and maintain sustainable communities.
Organized Research Centers
- Center for Autonomous Solar Power/CASP focuses on reducing the cost of solar power and enhancing energy efficiency.
- Center for Collective Dynamics of Complex Systems studies the collective dynamics of various types of interacting agents as complex systems.
- Center for Energy-Smart Electronic Systems/ES2 develops methods for efficiently operating electronic systems by controlling resources and managing workloads to achieve optimal energy consumption.
- Center for Research in Advanced Sensor Technologies and Environmental Sustainability develops low-cost, low power sensing technologies using sustainable and biodegradable materials and processes that leave no environmental footprints.
- Energy Storage Engine in Upstate New York Is funded by the National Science Foundation, the regional innovation engine promotes research and development and workforce development activities related to energy storage and battery advancements.
- NAT-CHANGE - Natural Global Environmental Change Center brings together multiple disciplines to address critical issues related to anthropogenic change impacts on natural systems, including climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, and the development of sustainable solutions.
- New Energy New York Is a federally designated EDA Tech Hub, NENY leads a coalition focused on establishing a robust domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem through economic development, workforce development, and commercialization activities.
