Professor, Director of Graduate Studies
Professor McDonough teaches and writes on aspects of the European avant-gardes, modern art and architecture, and twentieth-century French cultural and intellectual history. He is a member of Binghamton University’s Art History Department and sits on the steering committee of the University’s Material and Visual Worlds Trandisciplinary Area of Excellence. A member of the International Association of Art Critics, McDonough served as an editor of Grey Room (2005-2012) and he publishes regularly in OSMOS (where he is contributing editor), Parkett, and Texte zur Kunst. His books include The Situationists and the City (Verso, 2009), “The Beautiful Language of My Century” (MIT Press, 2007), The Invisible Flâneuse? Gender, Public Space, and Visual Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris, co-edited with Aruna D’Souza (Manchester University Press, 2006), and Guy Debord and the Situationist International: Texts and Documents (MIT Press, 2002). He has been a scholar in residence at the Académie de France à Rome / Villa Medici (2015) and a recipient of a curatorial research grant from FACE / Étant donnés: The French-American Fund for Contemporary Art (2010).
McDonough is currently working on an anthology assembling his essays on post-Pictures Generation photographic practices.
