Higher Education and Student Affairs Admitted Students Hub

Welcome to the Higher Education and Student Affairs Program

The information below will help you get ready for orientation and your first semester as a Binghamton University graduate student.

Letter from the chair

Welcome to Binghamton University’s Department of Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA)! We are happy to welcome you to our vibrant community of scholars, practitioners, mentors, and friends.

You are embarking on a professional journey that will enable you to make a difference in the lives of college students. Now more than ever higher education needs the skills of trained educators employing a theory-to-practice approach to engage students, to support student success, and to create educational environments that promote inclusion and belonging.

Throughout the HESA program, you will encounter both challenge and support. In classes you will be engaged in class discussion and large and small group hands-on learning activities to help make the connections between course material and professional practice. You will complete projects and assignments that will challenge you to think deeply and to engage with course materials. You will engage in practical experiences, such as internships, that give you the opportunity to develop professional skills and to gain professional experience. You also will meet advisors, mentors, and colleagues.

To help you get started on this journey, we have prepared materials and information that will help you be successful in the program. These are important materials and I encourage you to review them closely.

We are glad that you are joining our Higher Education and Student Affairs community!

Best,

Deborah J. Taub (she/her/hers)
