International Pronouns Day

International Pronouns Day is observed on the third Wednesday of October and seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace.

Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender expansive people. Learning to refer to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves, not by those determined by our own assumptions, is basic to human dignity. Our trans and gender expansive students and employees expend lots of energy responding to being mis-gendered, whether they do so verbally or silently to themselves. Setting a gender-affirming tone across campus helps students and employees put their focus in the right place, on their work.

Here you will find articles, resources and tips to build a campus climate where being respectful of gender identities is simply who we are.

Ask Me My Pronouns: A Virtual Conversation

Referring to someone by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. University employees are invited to join Q Center staffer Ian Shick and SOGIE Peer Educator Cait Roberts for a lunch-hour conversation from noon-1 p.m. about pronouns.

Both Shick and Roberts use they/them pronouns and are excited for you to engage with them in this conversation. If you ever had a question about how to ask someone their pronouns, why some folks use a non-binary pronoun like they/them or just don't understand all the fuss over pronouns, this is your chance ask questions!
