Background
Saxophonist Dan Miller received his BME degree with performance honors from Syracuse University and his MME degree from Ithaca College. His saxophone teachers have included April Lucas, Ronald L. Caravan, Steven Mauk and Jamal Rossi.
Miller regularly performs as the soprano saxophonist with the Empire Saxophone Quartet and as a musician in classical, jazz and rock settings. He has appeared with the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Binghamton Philharmonic, national tours of shows including Chicago and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and with acts including Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Martha Reeves.
Miller has been a public-school music teacher for more than 30 years and is currently the high school band director and the curriculum coordinator for music and visual arts in the Spencer-Van Etten School District, where he teaches music theory and directs the high school band, choir and jazz band. He serves as a band director for the American Music Abroad Red Tour each summer and has conducted concerts in France, England, Finland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Miller also co-directs the Southern Tier-based Teen Jazz Project, teaches saxophone on the faculty of SUNY Broome, and serves as the assistant band director for the Vestal High School Marching Band. He has been honored with the Outstanding Jazz Educator Award from the National Band Association and regularly works as a guest conductor, soloist and clinician throughout the Southern Tier of New York state and Pennsylvania. He joined the Binghamton University Department of Music faculty in 2017.
