2021 Contest Wrap-up

The 2021 Art of Science competition drew dozens of entries, highlighting the creativity of Binghamton University faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, postdocs and staff members.

Jessica Fridrich, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering, took Best in Show and First Place in The World Around Us Category for her photograph titled "Blue Flame." Here's how Fridrich described her submission: "The early southwest settlers had to cope with many challenges, one of them being water shortages. White Pocket, the result of an ancient landslide depicted in the picture during a dramatic sunset, provided this source during the monsoons through natural depressions in sandstone."

Yuhao Yuan, a doctoral candidate in biomedical engineering, and Fake Lu, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, took First Place in Visualizing the Unseen Category with their entry titled "Label-Free Imaging of Water in Cartilage Tissue."

The 2021 judges were Yan Sun, manager, Health Sciences Core Facility; Surinder Kahai, associate professor, School of Management; and Kirk Van Zandbergen, photographer and owner of Van Zandbergen Photography.
