Title IX Newsletter

Spring 2024 Newsletter Topics:

The Title IX Office releases a semesterly newsletter to update the campus
community about planned activities, important updates, and opportunities for
engagement. Below you can find our news and updates for the spring semester.

1.  Presentations

During the fall 2023 semester, the Title IX Office reached record numbers (over
1,200 individuals) of university community members through outreach and
presentations. Ongoing training and education were provided for Residential Life,
Department Chairs and Graduate Directors, Athletics, Campus Recreation and Club
Sports, the FRI Program, New Faculty and Graduate Students, Telefund Staff,
sections of UNIV 101 and Scholars Program classes, and more. Anyone interested in
a presentation from the Title IX Office can contact Title IX Coordinator Dr. Andrew
Baker (607-777-2486 or abaker@binghamton.edu) or Deputy Title IX Coordinator
Katy Perry (607-777-3214 or cperry@binghamton.edu).

2.  VARCC

The VARCC continues to provide support and resources to victims and survivors of
interpersonal violence. Since our last newsletter, the VARCC has provided several
outreach opportunities for the campus community including presence at “Chalk the
Walk,” multiple resource fairs in the residential communities, collaborative
presentations with the Title IX Office, and events for Domestic Violence Awareness
Month. For more information, be sure to visit the VARCC webpage!

3.  Accommodations for Pregnant/Parenting Students

Title IX protects students from discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, false
pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery therefrom. The Title IX Office
assists students by providing reasonable accommodations that can help support
them in completing their education and meeting their academic goals.
Students seeking accommodations should contact the Title IX Office as soon as
possible so we can better understand their unique circumstances and develop a
reasonable accommodation plan. We encourage students to re-engage with our
office as their circumstances develop or change over the course of their pregnancy
or other related condition. Accommodations are not retroactive. Students must
contact the Title IX Office and request services before or at the time they are
needed.

For more information, visit our website: https://www.binghamton.edu/services/title-ix/parenting/index.html

If you know a student with one of the above conditions, we encourage you to
connect them with our office as soon as possible. Faculty and staff that are
interested in receiving training regarding accommodations for pregnant/parenting
students can contact Title IX Coordinator Dr. Andrew Baker (607-777-2486 or
abaker@binghamton.edu) or Deputy Title IX Coordinator Katy Perry (607-777-3214
or cperry@binghamton.edu).

4.  Title IX Rulemaking

The federal government released new proposed changes to Title IX in June of 2022,
and has announced a plan to publish new regulations in March 2024.  Proposed
changes to Title IX may be found here.  The Title IX Office has reviewed the
proposed changes and developed plans for if and when the final regulations are
implemented.  The office will be offering training opportunities regarding any
changes resulting from any new regulations. Anyone interested in receiving training
regarding the implementation of the new regulations can contact Title IX
Coordinator Dr. Andrew Baker (607-777-2486 or abaker@binghamton.edu) or
Deputy Title IX Coordinator Katy Perry (607-777-3214 or cperry@binghamton.edu).

5. Professional Development

On November 15, both Andrew Baker and Katy Perry had the opportunity to attend
the SUNY Title IX Coordinators Association (STIXCA) Conference. Guest speakers at
the conference included representatives from SUNY Office of General Counsel,
SUNY Student Conduct Institute, and others from SUNY System Administration. The
conference keynote presentation focused on Title IX Pregnancy Accommodations.
Both Andrew and Katy are members of the STIXCA Executive Board: Andrew is the
current President-elect, and Katy is the Website Manager.
In addition, Andrew and Katy have completed over 30 hours of professional
development during the fall term by attending various webinars and training
opportunities offered by professional organizations to which the Title IX office
maintains membership.
