Research shows that when college students make connections early on, they’re more likely to remain at the University and do better socially, academically and emotionally.
The New Student of Color Mentoring Program (NSOCMP) aims to help new students of color become familiar with the campus and build connections with other students, faculty, and staff of color. This program offers various opportunities for interaction within the University's network of students and staff and supports students upon their arrival on campus and throughout their academic journey.
This mentorship program will help enhance the college experience for first-year students of color by:
- Improving integration into their selected field of study
- Reducing social barriers that can impact motivation and persistence
- Expanding their network of developmental mentoring relationships for long-term persistence and positive achievement outcomes.
The NSOCMP encourages mentors and mentees to meet in person at least three times per semester during their first two years on campus. Meetings typically last between 30 minutes and an hour, scheduled at a mutually agreed-upon time and place. These sessions provide a space for questions, ideas, conversation, and guidance. With mentors from across campus, this program offers numerous opportunities and valuable expertise.
We are recruiting both mentors and mentees. For more information, email us at mrc@binghamton.edu
