BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton University Art Museum will host an opening reception celebrating "Affinities, Dialogues and Divergences: Art Faculty Engage with the Permanent Collection," from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 24. The exhibition will remain on display through Saturday, May 24, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Building on campus. Both events are free and open to the public.
The exhibition will highlight a practice well known to artists –the study and aesthetic response to objects created by other artists and artisans. After reviewing approximately 3,000 objects dating from antiquity to the present in the Binghamton University Art Museum, 11 faculty members from the Department of Art, each selected a single work of art from the museum’s permanent collection to serve as an inspiration for an original work of art. The object chosen by each artist will be installed alongside the new work.
Graduate students from the Department of Art History interviewed the artists and composed labels to accompany each artist’s installation. The exhibition unites Binghamton University’s departments of Art and Art History, along with the museum, in a common purpose.
Participating faculty members include: Jim Bohary, Frank Chang, Alexandra Davis, Ronald Gonzalez, Blazo Kovacevic, Natalija Mijatovic, Kathryn M. Niles, Costa Sakellariou, Jim Stark, John Thomson and Michael Wesko.
