She did an externship in Summer 2025 on a medical-surgical and Progressive Care unit, and hopes to work in critical care or labor and delivery in the future. Currently, her capstone is in a medical-surgical unit at Delaware Valley Hospital.

Pet Away Worry and Stress (PAWS)
Binghamton University’s Pet Away Worry and Stress (PAWS) program provides students, faculty and staff, Animal-Assisted Interactions (AAI) with registered therapy dogs. Meet Decker Alumni Heather Edwards! She worked at UHS BGH on Med Surg for 2 years after nursing school, then went on to work in the NICU at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for 8 years where they did in unit procedures, took care of extremely low birth weight babies, did transport and oscillators, etc. She then moved to Nebraska to a very small, rural town and worked in a 25 bed critical access hospital where I did everything (med surg, ER, adult ICU, L&D and Covid ICU) and worked there for 7 years and then she moved back here. Then she went back to UHS BGH med surg for a year and now she is working in the GI lab at UHS.

Join Decker College Alumni Jessica Jesnes and Kate Manalastas to learn more about why starting in a new grad Med Surg position is what was best for them! Learn about where they are today and how med surgery impacted their ability to get there! Come with questions.
A little bit about Jess "I began at Binghamton in 2020 as a direct admit into the traditional nursing program and graduated in 2024. After completing my capstone on a med tele floor at Cayuga Medical Center, I realized the value of starting my career on a general med surg floor. I took my NCLEX in August and soon after, I began my job search with clear non-negotiables: proximity to home, unionization, pay goals, and safe patient ratios. I quickly learned starting off on a more generalized floor would allow me to more easily find a job which met all these requirements. I accepted a position at Westchester Medical Center, a level one trauma center, on 5N, one of the hospital's med surg units. As the hospital’s designated bariatric surgery unit and the only unit certified to perform peritoneal dialysis across med-surg, step-down, and ICU, 5N has provided broad clinical exposure, advanced training, and strong skill development. Starting on a general med-surg floor gave me a solid foundation, the opportunity for multiple certifications, and the confidence to grow in any direction in my nursing career."
About Kate "I graduated Decker in May of 2024! While at Binghamton, I was the President of the Nursing Student Association, and a Decker Peer Advisor/Student Ambassador!

Join Dr. Carey Cadieux for an introductory session about the essential areas of medical cannabis care, including the human endocannabinoid system, pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, research around cannabis effectiveness, New York state cannabis policy, ethical/ legal concerns, and safe cannabis use.
Dr. Cadieux is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences and Past-President of the American Cannabis Nurses Association.
