ELI Conversation Pairs

ELI Conversation Pairs is a volunteer program in which native speakers of English are paired with non-native English (ELL/ESL/EFL/ELI) speaking students and asked to spend at least one hour a week together in conversation. The purpose of the program is to give ELL students more opportunities to converse in English outside of the classroom and to provide them with a person whom they can question about American language and culture. In addition, the native speakers benefit from the opportunity to get to know someone from another culture.

English Conversation Pairs has been quite successful for the last 20+ years. Participating ELL students have reported that their English has improved, and native-speaking students have enjoyed learning about other cultures and helping a fellow student. Both groups have been enthusiastic about the opportunity to make new friends.

This semester, Conversation Pairs will be in person! Applications are open until midnight on Sunday, September 12th (applications will still be accepted after this date, but your chances of being assigned a partner may be reduced).

Unfortunately, there will no longer be an in-person Welcome and Orientation meeting, as Old Union Hall is being used for COVID-19 testing. Instead, I will email you the contact information of your partner on Wednesday, September 15th, along with other details about the program. Each pair will set up their own times and places to meet.

Do you want to improve your English? Would you like to learn more about US culture? Are you interested in sharing your own culture and language with other students? If you answered yes to any or all these questions, you may want to participate in the English Conversation Pairs Program.

Through this program, you will be matched with a partner who is interested in learning more about your language and culture in exchange for helping you practice your English and sharing ideas about US culture with you. Each pair will set up their own times and places to meet.

  • Information for Native English Speakers

If you would like to help a fellow student improve his or her English abilities and learn more about another culture yourself, then you may wish to participate in English Conversation Pairs.

Through this program, you will be matched with a partner who is interested in improving their English and learning more about US culture.  Most of the English language learners come from Asia, especially China, India, and South Korea. They are a mix of undergraduate and graduate students. Each pair will set up their own times and places to meet.
