How Binghamton Researchers Are Spending Summer: Selfies From Labs, Field Sites, and Beyond!

We asked the Binghamton community to share their summer selfies, and they delivered – from exploring clean energy in state-of-the-art campus labs to conducting anthropological research in Africa. Meet the researchers chasing discovery this summer!

Summer "glowup"

These students are developing new glowing materials that could make solar panels and LEDs more efficient as part of the Summer Research Immersion program, right here on campus. From left to right: Josh Selvarajah, Alanna Wu, Arnaldo Ferreira, Jordan Kalker, and Brian Kang.

Digging deeper

Researchers at the Public Archaeology Facility are conducting archaeological investigations on a mid-19th-century farmstead. From left to right: Lee Hammond, John Ferri, Evan Lisle, and Emma Jean Wyrick

Anthropology in action

Logan Wheeler, left, is in Gambia collecting blood samples and other measurements from villagers through Assistant Professor of Anthropology Laure Spake's lab, which examines topics related to allomothering, cooperation, and maternal and child well-being.

Clean energy up close

Students in the Summer Research Immersion Clean Energy Research Stream saw their synthesized nanoparticles for clean energy applications visualized under a transmission electron microscope in the Analytical & Diagnostics Laboratory at the University's Innovative Technologies Complex. From left to right: Brian Kang, Krish Badhan, Xiao Lian Lin, Arnaldo Ferreira, Joshua Selvarajah, Jordan Kalker, Jack Signe, Research Assistant Professor Yancy Luan, and Alanna Wu.

Building the future of batteries

Students Brandon Tang and Olneya Fong are conducting research on lithium-ion batteries at the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage, a campus lab directed by Nobel Prize-winning chemist M. Stanley Whittingham.

Caterpillar quest

Research Assistant Professor Christina Baer is searching for caterpillars (which hide on the undersides of the leaves and branches!) for one of her First-Year Research Immersion student team's projects.

Microscopic mission

Students Diana Charles, Roshana Akhtari, and Shirmin Islam are studying biofilms on campus in the lab of Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Claudia Marques.

Zooming into nursing research

Assistant Professor Jolene Kittle from the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences is conducting focus groups via Zoom to explore the experiences of nurses with federal health policy changes since Jan. 2025.

Breaking down biofilms

Graduate student Bharti Sharma and Bridges to the Baccalaureate program student Alyssa are doing research at the Binghamton Biofilm Research Center, studying biomedical device-associated infections to eliminate bacteria from these devices.

Exploring the headlines of a health crisis

Assistant Professor Nikoli Attai visited the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago to find news articles on the country's response to the HIV crisis.

Making sense of muscles

Brian Rooney, a clinical assistant professor at Decker College, poses in the Anatomy and Physiology Lab, where he is developing a tool for learning muscles of the human body, along with student Olivia Wadowiec.

Tracking the rise of generative AI

Kaige Gao, an assistant professor at the School of Management, is conducting research on how generative AI is reshaping innovation and digital platforms.

Solving water mysteries

Students Alexis Mobilia and Tasneem Tawalbeh are investigating emerging contaminants and their interactions in aquatic environments in Assistant Professor Yuxin Wang’s lab.

Homeschooling research -- at home

Associate Professor Amber Simpson from the Dept. of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Leadership is analyzing interview data with STEM professionals who were homeschooled – sitting cozy at her parents' house in Tennessee!

Sprinting salamanders

Undergraduate Kira Sherman and PhD student Sophia Zaslow pose with an eastern red-backed salamander. The pair is conducting research examining the connection between a species' color and its sprint speed.

Exploring Black history in Binghamton

Assistant Professor Samuel Elikem Kwame Nyamuame and students visited the Downtown Binghamton Freedom Trail as part of their archival research in the Africana Summer Learning Institute.

Sweet success

Patric Crawford, left and Gianna Siciliano, right, enjoy a sweet treat having just finished their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience with Clinical Associate Professor Emily Leppien.

Targeting new treatments

Students in Summer Research Immersion are studying molecular targets for treatment and delivery on campus in the Biomedical Chemistry research stream.

The sound of science

Graduate students Aishwarya Sririum and Sara Aghazadeh are doing research in the anechoic chamber, one of the quietest rooms on Earth, located right on campus. Learn about their caterpillar research that was featured in Popular Science and more!

A smarter step forward

Professor of Mechanical Engineering Shahrzad Towfighian and her team (Ioana Tiu, Mahmood Chahari, Osama Abdalla, and Ali Eskandari) are testing a smart knee replacement technology supported by a 2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health!
