Program Overview
For the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Spanish or French, students pursue their master’s degree and NYS teaching certification to teach Spanish or French in grades 7-12. Students may either pursue the traditional MAT program or the 4+1 course plan for students already enrolled at Binghamton University. Taking coursework in TLEL and Romance Languages and Literatures, the program consists of a minimum of 35 graduate credits, with 21 credits in TLEL, 8 credits in Spanish or French, and 6 credits of supervised internships. Students complete core courses plus one full day per week of fieldwork prior to the internship. The internship is by admission only; students’ academic work must be satisfactory, and students must demonstrate positive dispositions for teaching in both academic courses and in fieldwork before being admitted to student teaching.
*Please note that at this time, the Adolescence Education MAT Programs are offered in-person only. The MAT program is for individuals looking to obtain initial New York State teaching certification. This program is NOT for individuals who are already certified to teach.
