Academic Advising Services in SOM

You are one of approximately 1,500 undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Management. The SOM Advising Office can be of invaluable help to you throughout your years at Binghamton. We recommend that you visit the Advising Office on two particular occasions: when you wish to officially declare your concentration if you are a management major, and at the beginning of your senior year, when you are advised to complete a seventh-semester check of your completed coursework and remaining requirements. In addition, you are strongly encouraged to seek advisement whenever you have a question concerning your degree program.

The Advising Office

The School of Management Advising Office is located in Academic A, room 142. The Advising Office should be the first point of contact for any questions or problems that may arise. Appointments are rarely needed and the Advising staff can usually answer your questions on a walk-in basis. If necessary, an appointment may be made for situations requiring lengthy discussion. The SOM Academic Advising Office is designed to be a one-stop service for all current and future students. The office is staffed by a professional advisor and several staff and peer assistants and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Summers 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Students are invited to visit whenever the need arises. Contact with an advisor can also be made via e-mail: bperry@binghamton.edu or Instant Message (somadvising) or by calling 607-777-2316.

Completion of the desired School of Management degree is the responsibility of the student. You must understand your requirements and deadlines in order to do this efficiently. To assist in that process, the School offers extensive academic advising opportunities. Starting with Orientation you are very strongly encouraged to attend. Once you begin the program, the SOM Academic Advising Office should be your first stop when academic issues arise. In addition to general academic advising, the staff is prepared to offer assistance in such matters as adjusting to college, coping with academic difficulties and tutoring, joining student clubs, professional development and much more.

Academic Advising also provides students with all the information and tools needed to navigate the curriculum successfully. Advice on course selection, choice of major, study abroad, internships and general info about Binghamton University and the School of Management are readily available. We also connect with the Placement Director to provide assistance in the internship and job search process. The links on this page show the most commonly used resources and forms.

Prospective students are welcome to contact us anytime or to visit the office during campus visits. The Prospective Students pages on the SOM website also provide lots of useful information.

Electronic Communication

The Advising Office maintains several listservs for communicating with all or portions of the student body. Students are automatically subscribed to the appropriate listservs and receive announcements concerning events in the school, upcoming deadlines, changes to the curriculum, recruiting activities and other topics. Students are expected to use e-mail immediately upon arrival at Binghamton in order to take advantage of this information.

Faculty in many courses use e-mail and Web-based bulletin boards for communications and instructional assistance. Familiarity with electronic communication is vital to your education in School of Management. You should check your e-mail daily. Failure to read email regularly almost certainly will result in your missing a valuable opportunity for an internship or job. Instant Messaging is also available to contact the Advisor. More details on electronic communications and how to subscribe to SOM listserv can be found here.
