Spring Housing Process

The Residential Life office will be closed starting on December 24th and will reopen on January 5th; we will not be able to provide customer support while the office is closed.

Spring 2026 Housing Process

Welcome to the Spring 2026 on-campus housing process. This process is ONLY for newly admitted Spring 2026 students and current students returning from semester abroad programs and/or leave.

The Spring Housing Selection Process began on December 22nd, 2025.

New first-year students

  • Are required to live on campus and are guaranteed housing.
  • Are not eligible to live in the Apartments Community.
  • 1st-Year students who do not participate in housing selection will be given an assignment prior to Move In on January 17th, 2026.

  • Watch your Binghamton University email for updates.

New transfer students and students returning from study abroad/leave

  • Are not required to live on campus and are not guaranteed housing.
  • May live in the Apartments Community or the traditional lower campus residence halls as space permits.
  • New Transfer Students who have completed their Housing Application may log into the Housing Portal now and select a bed based on what is still available. There are step-by-step instructions on the Housing Portal to walk you through selecting a bed. If you are a New Transfer Student and have not yet completed your application, you must do so first and can then select a bed.
  • We recommend you view Our Communities webpage to learn about our available room styles as well as our room rates as you make your selection.

Please Note: Our office will be closed starting on December 24th and will reopen on January 5th; we will not be able to provide customer support while the office is closed.

    Returning Students

  • Returning students who still wish to live in on-campus housing can share their interest via the Spring 2026 Housing Interest Form. Submissions will be reviewed in the order they were received once the Residential Life Office re-opens on Monday, January 5th, 2026. We ask for your patience during this time and know that your request is a priority for us. If we are able to offer you housing, we will reach out via your Binghamton University email, so be sure to keep an eye on your inbox; offers will be time sensitive.

  • We recommend you view Our Communities webpage to learn about our available room styles as well as our room rates. You will be able to share your community preferences on the interest form and while we will do our best to meet your preference, we cannot guarantee what will be available to offer as we begin to look at requests.

The housing sign up process is an online process and takes place in two parts:

Part 1 - Submit your Housing Application - Access the Housing Portal Here

Part 2 - Select your room - Room selection starts on December 22, 2025

Take the time to read all of the information on this web page for a full understanding of the housing sign-up process.

Communication

Throughout the housing process, communication will be sent exclusively through your Binghamton University email account. Please check your B-mail often for important dates, deadlines, updates and process information.

We will not be available to provide assistance or respond to emails from December 24, 2025 to January 1, 2026.

Available Space

  • Available space in the Spring Housing Process is based on vacancies created by students who are not returning to campus for the spring semester.
  • This is an individual process.  Students will not be able to form roommate groups in the housing portal.
  • Completely vacant double rooms are not typically available in this process.

Requests from students looking to live with a current resident should be emailed to reslife@binghamton.edu.  In order to meet these requests the following criteria must be met:

  • The current resident must have a confirmed vacancy in their room.
  • The request must be mutual.  Both the current resident and the incoming student must email their request to Residential Life from their Binghamton University email address.
  • Both students must have the same housing type on their housing application.
  • Requests must be received by December 12.

Students who are looking to live with another new incoming student should email their request to reslife@binghamton.edu.  In order to meet these requests the following must be met:

  • There must be a completely vacant double room available (this is unlikely).
  • The request must be mutual. Both students must email independently from their BU email account to make the request.
  • Both students must select the same housing type on their housing application.
  • Requests must be received by December 12.

Considerations for Deciding Where to Live

  • Housing costs vary by area and room type. As you consider your options, be sure to check out the Room Rates.
  • Consider where campus construction is scheduled to occur during the Spring 2026 semester. Many communities will be impacted by construction processes.
  • If you prefer corridor-style living to promote meeting and connecting with people more easily, consider Newing College or College in the Woods Communities. Old Digman and Old Rafuse in Dickinson are also good options for students looking for corridor-style living.
  • For proximity to classroom buildings, especially, the Lecture Hall, consider Hinman College.

Housing Accommodations

Binghamton University is committed to achieving equal educational opportunity and full participation for students with disabilities. Students with documented disabilities who require an accommodation in order to fully participate in the residential component of their college experience may apply for housing accommodations through Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). Housing accommodations include, but are not limited to, visual fire alarms, first-floor rooms, elevator access, bed-height adjustments, climate control, single-rooms, and wheelchair accessible bathrooms.

Residential Life has the most flexibility to work with and meet accommodations for students who apply for and receive their accommodation at least 30 days prior to the start of room selection. Students applying/re-applying for a housing accommodation must also participate in the housing process. For complete information, go to the Services for Students with Disabilities Housing Accommodations web page.

Housing Type

When starting the housing application, all students are required to select a Housing Type. Binghamton University offers two types of housing:

Housing Type 1: Housing based on Gender Identity

  • If you choose this housing type you will only be able to live with others who share the same gender identity.

Housing Type 2: All Gender Housing

  • If you choose this housing type you agree to live with others who may or may not share your gender identity; with the intention of creating a welcoming environment for all.
  • If you select All Gender Housing you agree to live with a direct roommate of any gender identity within your bedroom. Students who only want to share a bedroom and/ or living space with others of the same gender identity should select Housing Type 1.

Information regarding gender identity and how to enter your gender identity with the university is available on the Student Records website
