About Us
Binghamton Motorsports Formula SAE (FSAE) is a student-driven motorsports team that designs, manufactures, and races Formula-style vehicles powered by both internal combustion (IC) and electric (EV) powertrains.
The team competes in Formula SAE competitions against universities from across the country, applying engineering principles to maximize vehicle performance, efficiency, and reliability while minimizing costs. These purpose-built race cars are capable of accelerating and cornering faster than road-going sports cars. Throughout its history, the team has competed at several motorsports venues, including New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Watkins Glen International, and Brechin Motorsports Park.
Binghamton Motorsports provides students with hands-on engineering experience while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills. Members apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world engineering challenges across various disciplines, including vehicle dynamics, powertrain development, electrical control systems, aerodynamics, composite manufacturing, and financial management. By operating both IC and EV programs, the team provides students with opportunities to explore traditional and emerging automotive technologies while gaining experience in the complete vehicle development process.
Binghamton Motorsports FSAE originated as a series of independent senior capstone projects between 2005 and 2018. In 2019, the team joined Binghamton University's Watson Competes! program, expanding participation to students across all academic disciplines. In 2023, the team transitioned from internal combustion to electric powertrains, developing its first battery-powered race car in seven years and strengthening its commitment to sustainable energy and battery research.
Beginning with the 2026–27 season, Binghamton Motorsports expanded to support both internal combustion and electric vehicle development, combining the performance and engineering challenges of traditional combustion engines with the innovation and sustainability of electric propulsion. This dual-platform approach allows the team to broaden its technical expertise, increase opportunities for student involvement, and continue advancing its competitive capabilities in Formula SAE.
