Tips for College Success

2021 commencement

Seek academic support resources early

One of the biggest struggles is the lack of a family support system. With an increased college courseload, some students will find themselves overwhelmed. It is important to seek tutoring or to visit your professors during office hours.

Find other highly motivated students

Seek study partners and group members that will motivate you.  They will help to make the most of your time and push you to learn.

Embrace who you are

A classroom environment can be intimidating, but remember to sit in the front row and speak up — your perspective matters and you belong here!

Be proactive with financial assistance

There are a variety of scholarship opportunities available. It is important to dedicate time to search for these opportunities.

Get involved

Our campus offers many various clubs and student organizations, make it a point to get involved! This is the quickest way to gain a sense of belonging.

Don't overload yourself

A common mistake is not considering the time needed to complete coursework outside of the classroom. If you are planning on attending school and working a job, don’t overcommit on other extra- or co-curricular activities. Focus on your academics and your overall wellness.

Take smart chances

This is your opportunity to try something new that intrigues you. This is a fundamental time in your life where you can discover who you are and new interests.

Build a support system

If your family is not familiar with the challenges of college, where do you go for support? There are many support services on campus that help to motivate and assist students who are struggling towards their journey.

Don't doubt yourself

College is a big step, everyone experiences doubt and nervousness. But don’t let it get the best of you.  You have worked hard to reach this milestone. Understand that your family is proud of you and your ambition!
