Applicants will apply using Terra Dotta, the IEGI’s education abroad and inbound exchange software platform.

Official Academic Transcripts

We require official academic transcripts for all completed coursework at the time of application. (Please email intlexch@binghamton.edu with a copy of courses in progress, if they are excluded from the official academic transcript.) Graduate student applicants should submit their final bachelor’s level transcript in addition to their graduate-level transcript within their application.

Passport

Please upload a high-quality image of the biographical page of your passport to your application. Apply for a passport as soon as you consider studying abroad as an exchange student, if you do not already have one.

Financial Certification

Please complete the International Exchange Student Financial Statement in its entirety to attest that you possess the minimum required funds to attend Binghamton University during your exchange program at Binghamton University. Consult the “Estimate of Costs” tab of the Binghamton University Inbound Exchange program brochure to find this information. Fall/academic year applicants must ensure that they have selected the correct Cost Sheet for their exchange program. Nominated students from Al Akhawayn University (AUI) should subtract the Estimated Cost of Housing when showing proof of funding.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

The U.S. Department of State requires proof of English language proficiency for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, which brings hundreds of visiting international professors, researchers, and other types of short-term scholars to Binghamton University every year.

U.S. Institutions must determine that prospective exchange visitors possess “sufficient proficiency in the English language, as determined by an objective measurement of English language proficiency, successfully to participate in his or her program and to function on a day-to-day basis.” [22 CFR 62.11(a)(2)]

The rule applies to all J-1 Exchange Visitors, including those from English-speaking countries and those attending English-taught universities in countries where English is not the official language.

Finally, sponsors are required to retain evidence of how they measured the applicant's English language proficiency so that it may be made available to the U.S. Department of State upon request.

Binghamton University will accept the following official test scores as proof of English language proficiency:

  • TOEFL: 80 (or 4.0 in the new scoring system)
  • IELTS: 6.5

A template letter for partner universities whose language of instruction is English is available upon request by emailing intlexch@binghamton.edu.
