Binghamton University introduces Bearcat Dining, a bold, new campus dining brand
Binghamton University introduces Bearcat Dining, a bold, new campus dining brand
Beginning June 1, 2026, Binghamton University is introducing Bearcat Dining, a new dining experience designed to reflect the diversity, energy, and everyday needs of students and the entire campus community. Chartwells Higher Education, the University’s newly selected dining provider, will bring Bearcat Dining to life and oversee dining operations on campus.
Built around student feedback and campus collaboration, Bearcat Dining represents a refreshed approach to campus dining, one centered on greater variety, expanded access, inclusive options, wellness, and experiences that feel distinctly connected to Binghamton. Chartwells will continue to engage with key stakeholders through student group partnerships, surveys, and focus groups to ensure the program evolves in step with the needs of the Binghamton community.
“This new dining experience is about listening to the Binghamton community and translating what we heard into action,” said Paola Mignone, assistant vice president for residential experiences and auxiliaries at Binghamton University. “With bold, innovative new dining services and more ways to customize every meal, students will have greater choice, flexibility, and personalization, whether they’re grabbing something quick between classes or sitting down with friends.”
New and enhanced offerings across campus include:
- Expanded Halal and Kosher Access — Based on direct student feedback, Halal and Kosher options will be easier to discover and access across campus, including a new all-kosher truck, Nosh & Go, and a Kosher Grab n’ Go program that delivers every day convenience.
- "Delicious Without" Across Campus — Chartwells’ “Delicious Without” program, free from the top nine allergens and gluten, will expand to all four dining halls (C4, CIW, Hinman, and Appalachian), increasing safe and welcoming options for students with food allergies and sensitivities. Two registered dietitians will be available to support students with special dietary needs and preferences.
- International-Inspired Food Hall at C4 — The C4 dining hall will debut a globally inspired food hall featuring Chartwells concepts such as Masala Dabba, an Indian inspired station, and La Mesa, a Latin concept. A dedicated kosher station will continue to serve as a cornerstone of inclusive dining on campus.
- Alumni Roots and Local Flavor — Chartwells is proud to continue its partnership with Chick-N-Bap, a standout alumni-founded favorite, and Royal Indian, a local staple, both of which continue to serve the Binghamton community at the University Union. Building on these campus favorites, the Union is expanding its lineup with the arrival of new regional concepts, Halal Shack and Jamal’s Chicken, which bring even more variety and flavor to the dining experience.
- Revamped Food — Three upgraded food trucks will roll out across campus, expanding access to quick, high-quality dining, including Nosh & Go kosher food truck, Bearcat on the Prowl, and the Daily Sip for convenient, on-the-go access.
With a focus on global flavors, inclusive access, and authentic campus connections, Bearcat Dining represents a significant investment in the everyday experience of Binghamton students.
“Bearcat Dining is more than a new name. It is a commitment to building a dining program that reflects Binghamton’s students, culture, and campus pride,” said Nadeem Zafar, chief operating officer of Continental & West, Chartwells Higher Education. "We are thrilled to welcome Binghamton’s current dining associates to the Chartwells team and partner with the people who know this campus best. Together, we will build on their deep campus knowledge while delivering more variety, access, and hospitality in ways that make dining feel easier, more inclusive, and more connected to everyday student life.”

New exclusively online master's programs: Computer science or information systems!
The Watson College School of Computing is excited to announce new exclusively online Master of Science programs in computer science (CS) and information systems (IS).
Attend an information session to meet the School of Computing team and learn more about the online MSCS or MSIS degree programs during weekly information sessions, taking place at 5 p.m. every Wednesday. Register here: https://gograd.binghamton.edu/portal/watsonP?tab=comp
Highlights of the programs include:
- Binghamton is a top-tier "R1" research university with increasing national recognition for academic quality, innovative research and scholarship, and educational value.
- Same degree: Courses are completed 100% online, but you earn the same degree as students who attend Binghamton in person; our online program has the same standards, requirements and prestige as its in-person counterpart.
- Strong faculty: Well-known research-active faculty from Binghamton's School of Computing teach and support the online courses, holding regular virtual office hours to enable significant direct interaction and to ensure your learning.
- Flexible background: Students with undergraduate degrees in CS and closely related disciplines can immediately continue their education with graduate-level classes that build on undergraduate foundations. The program also includes a course designed to allow students without an extensive CS background to quickly build a foundation to succeed. For the MSIS program admission, students with a wider range of backgrounds are considered.
- Flexible pacing: You may take three to four courses per semester to complete the program in one year, or take as few as one course at a time — with breaks between semesters — to fit your studies around other responsibilities. The high-quality, pre-recorded lectures are broken down into smaller segments.
- Affordability: Binghamton University's annual in-state tuition for a master's program costs 58% less than the average graduate tuition at a private university, with comparable rates for out-of-state students.

New opportunity — "UDL + AI Design Studio"
New opportunity — "UDL + AI Design Studio"
This fall, the CLT is offering a six-week "UDL + AI Design Studio". This will be a small, cohort-based experience where faculty and graduate students bring one real teaching challenge and work through a structured redesign process with peer feedback and guided support. Using a simple WHY–WHAT–HOW framework grounded in Universal Design for Learning, participants will create a practical, ready-to-use teaching artifact while leveraging AI as a partner to draft, refine, and explore new approaches. The goal is immediate impact: a tested improvement to student engagement and learning, along with a clear plan for implementation and reflection in the spring.

BUC$ program to be discontinued
BUC$ program to be discontinued
BUC$, the optional student amenity that allows prepaid funds to be added to a student ID card to pay for certain University services, will be discontinued. This decision was made after a thorough review of campus needs and available technologies. The change allows a transition to more modern, flexible and widely used payment options across campus.
As of Aug. 4, 2025, adding funds to a BUC$ account on a student ID card will no longer be available. Any residual BUC$ balances will remain available for use through May 29, 2026. Dining Services and the University Bookstore will continue to accept BUC$ during this time. Students may also convert BUC$ balances to dining dollars or request a refund by emailing BinghamtonMealPlanOffice.USA@sodexo.com or visiting the Meal Plan office in UU-B02. Students are encouraged to spend BUC$ balances this academic year. Changes to student printing quotas have been made.

New opportunities to share your expertise through The Conversation
New opportunities to share your expertise through The Conversation
Do you want to see your research highlighted in high-profile media? Take a look below at the current opportunities and reach out to dhermanovitc@binghamton.edu and jbrhel@binghamton.edu if you would like to pitch yourself to write for The Conversation.
1. Presidential Security: The Conversation is looking for a scholar to explain why the recent White House Correspondents' Association dinner (with the president, vice president, and Speaker of the House in attendance) didn't qualify for a “National Special Security Event” designation. This story would examine how these security levels are decided and, more importantly, what that tells us about planning for massive 2026 events like the World Cup and America250. The Conversation wants to hear from presidential historians, national security policy experts, or other scholars who can examine the tension between leader accessibility and the complexities of the current security landscape.
2. Microlooting: The Conversation is looking for scholars to write about microlooting — everyday acts in which people share either their Netflix passwords or other such practices framed as resistance against big corporations. What are the ethical implications of such behaviours?
3. What makes muscles contract? For The Conversation's Curious Kids series, they are looking for a scholar to write a colorful and descriptive ~800-word explainer to answer the following question that was posed by a kid, but that would be engaging to readers of all ages: “What makes the cells of the muscles contract?” The ideal scholar might be an exercise physiologist or an orthopedic specialist, for instance, though scholars from other related disciplines are welcome.
4. Why are fingers different lengths? For the Curious Kids series, The Conversation is seeking a scholar who can write a fun and thoughtful piece that answers the following question posed by a child, but potentially wondered about by people of all ages: “Why are fingers different lengths?” This could perhaps be a scholar who is an evolutionary biologist, a hand surgeon, a bioengineer, or an expert in another relevant discipline. The desk encourages you to consider reaching out to scholars of color, but definitely feel free to suggest anyone you think is a good fit. When responding, share a link to the profile of the scholar you have in mind. The goal is a simple and engaging short article of ~750 words that will be accessible to young readers.
5. How is deli meat made? For the Curious Kids series, The Conversation is seeking a scholar who can write a fun and thoughtful piece that answers the following question posed by a child, but potentially wondered about by people of all ages: “How is deli meat made?” This would presumably be a food scientist or similar expert, though the desk is open to scholars from other relevant disciplines (especially multidisciplinary perspectives).
The Conversation is the most-read nonprofit news website in America, and features fact-based articles written by those in academia to provide greater depth to current events, science/medical news, and much more. All Conversation stories are published under a Creative Commons license — meaning hundreds of news sites and newspapers worldwide have republished Conversation content for free. Binghamton University has had more than 100 faculty members write for The Conversation, and many of them have submitted multiple articles over the last decade!
Do you have other research/expertise you would like to write about in The Conversation?
Use the link below to find the pitch form and submit your suggested story idea. Hold off on writing a complete draft until you hear from a Conversation editor about whether they’d like to pursue the topic; they will help you shape the outline of your story before you start writing. For More Information:

Expert alert — write for The Conversation!
Expert alert — write for The Conversation!
Do you want to see your research highlighted in high-profile media? Take a look below at the current opportunities and reach out to dhermanovitc@binghamton.edu and jbrhel@binghamton.edu if you would like to pitch yourself to write for The Conversation.
1. U.S. military:
Amid the US war with Iran, and amid reports of insufficient U.S. weapons stockpiles after six weeks of war, The Conversation is looking for a scholar who can examine U.S. military capabilities, given the apparent vulnerability of U.S. munitions and weapons systems. They are not looking for someone who is financially supported by or otherwise directly linked to the Department of Defense.
2. Alpha and AI classrooms:
The Conversation is interested in commissioning a story looking at the Alpha AI school model and how some parents are choosing to enroll their children in this AI-based private school network. What does research tell us about what is gained or lost from AI-focused education for young children? How can we measure if and how teachers can be replaced — or not — in a classroom setting?
3. Research on Cuba and the Caribbean:
The Conversation is looking for scholars doing research that's centered on Cuba or other islands in the Caribbean as it relates to diaspora populations in Florida. They are interested in stories about history and archaeology, health, education, environmental science, or the current political landscape. Even if not based in Florida, they are interested in your work!
4. What makes a pest a pest?:
Possums, wasps, wolves, and weeds — the flora and fauna that people consider pests are many. But many also serve key ecological functions, and, in certain contexts or over time, are considered welcome and desirable, rather than invasive. The Conversation is looking for a scholar to explain how what makes a "pest" depends on culture, context, capitalism, and any other factors they consider of note, with a particular focus on species that have toggled between “pest” and not over time or in different circumstances. This would ideally be addressed by a philosopher of science or an anthropologist, but the desk is open to scholars from other relevant disciplines (especially multidisciplinary perspectives).
5. Pollen season:
What makes one allergy season feel worse than others? The Conversation is looking for a pollen and allergies expert to write a short article explaining why 2026 has been so brutal for people with allergies in many parts of the country — what’s the role of warm winters, for example, and are some pollen sources more productive than others under conditions like we’re seeing this year? The desk is also open to pitches related to recent pollen/allergies research.
6. Super El Niño:
How do scientists know a strong El Niño is likely on the way — what are the signs, and what does a strong El Niño mean for disaster risk across the U.S., from drought and wildfires to hurricanes? The desk is looking for a professor or post-doc who is an expert in El Niño to clearly explain for a public audience.
7. Dance and spiritual devotion:
The Conversation is planning to start a series on the religious significance of dance. They would be interested in angles across different traditions.
8. Sacred objects series:
The Conversation is looking for scholars to pitch ideas around sacred objects that could be part of everyday spirituality for people or communities. These could also include the plants and trees that people might worship. They’d be interested in a broad range of ideas around these topics.
Use the online pitch form below to submit your suggested story idea. Hold off on writing a complete draft until you hear from a Conversation editor about whether they’d like to pursue the topic; they will help you shape the outline of your story before you start writing. For More Information:
