Harpur College's Commitment to International Students
Harpur College is committed to facilitating the success of international students through advising, programming, and outreach. We work together with International Student Advisors in ISSS and the professors within the English Language Institute to facilitate students' ability to be successful at Binghamton. International students can utilize the many tools and resources available through Harpur Academic Advising, and we encourage students to meet with an Academic Advisor at least once a semester.
Specifically for international students, Harpur College has trained academic advisors who focus on working with international students to connect academic planning and decision making with immigration regulations. It is important to discuss all academic decisions with an Academic Advisor to verify how it may affect your time at Binghamton. Additionally, it is important for all international students to also meet regularly with the Faculty Advisor in your major department along with an International Student Advisor in ISSS. Collectively we will work together to facilitate progress towards graduation and continued success at Binghamton University.
Academic Advisors are available to help with the following:
- Choosing a major/minor
- Scheduling courses
- Planning your degree
- Discovering co-curricular opportunities (research, internships, study abroad)
- Connecting with academic departments and other offices across campus
Advising for International Students
Harpur Academic Advising has two advisors who are aware of/specialize in the specific needs of international students. These advisors are available to help you make academic decisions, while ensuring you are also considering your immigration rules and regulations. They also work closely and collaborate with ISSS and ELI to streamline resources for international students in Harpur College. It is especially important for international students to work with Harpur Academic Advising in the following situations:
- Dropping or withdrawing from a course
- Scheduling summer and/or winter classes
- Pursuing internships
- Prior to scheduling courses in your final semester
- Considering online courses

Peer and professional Success Coaches support student learning through personalized one-on-one coaching appointments, workshops and access to virtual resources. They are trained to identify potential barriers to academic success and collaboratively construct a tailored success plan for each student. Success plans are meant to be worked through in one semester and include topics such as: effective goal setting, time management, study strategies and test preparation, organization, productivity management, etc.
In addition to these focus areas, the Success Coaching staff also works closely with campus partners to serve as a source of direct referrals to all student services. If they are not able to assist with a particular challenge, they connect students with the best qualified campus partner to address the situation.
