Construction update

School of Pharmacy

All of the structural steel has been installed at the School of Pharmacy. First floor framing and door frames are complete with the contractor moving on to the second floor. An exterior sheathing will be installed providing a temporary enclosure for work to progress on the basement, first, second and third floors through the winter. The contractor will focus on interior walls and rough-ins along with mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins. Parking lots on the south side of the site are in place with a final coat of asphalt to be installed in 2017. Light pole bases are also in place in these lots. The foundation and walls are constructed for the service garage. Physical Facilities staff continue to meet with Pharmacy school staff to refine laboratory, equipment and furniture needs.

Smart Energy Research and Development Facility

As most work has moved to the interior, fencing around the site was removed in the fall. Fall also saw the completion of a lot of site work including construction of retaining walls, landscaping and finishing of a parking lot. Work was recently completed on the connecting link between the Smart Energy Research and Development Facility and the Center of Excellence. Work on building finishes is ongoing. Equipment is being installed and labs are starting to be fitted out.

Global Center at Old Champlain

The steel roof structure and flooring for Korean Center is in place and canopy roofing and door installation is underway. Work on the interior portion of the project was completed at the end of December. A new pipe tunnel roof is in place and back-fill is complete for the addition portion of the project. Light gauge steel framing for the glass wall system is underway. Exterior work for a new walkway and landscaping will be completed in spring 2017.

Cayuga Hall renovation

Renovations are underway at Cayuga Hall. Exterior brick repairs are complete. All asbestos removal and demo has concluded. Framing and sheet-rock work is ongoing in the north part of the building. Plumbing has been installed and shower basins are being set. In January, finishing work will be underway in this area including painting of bedrooms, installation of fin tube coverings and tile work in restrooms. Spaces in the south part of the building will be framed and sheet-rocked.

Baseball field enhancements

Most of the work for this project was complete in fall 2016. A FieldTurf artificial surface was installed throughout the venue, including the baselines, the home plate area and pitcher’s mound. Broadcast-quality lights were installed which will allow the baseball team to play at night for the first time, adding flexibility to its schedule.

Central Heating Plant upgrades

Due to the upgrades, coal is no longer used. A new pollution control device and vertical exhaust stack have been installed. Two new electrical rooms, a new control room and interior office alterations are complete. The bucket elevator used to transport solid fuel was replaced, along with the chutes and hoppers. The project will be complete in summer 2017.

Administration Building chiller replacement

The Administration Building chiller replacement project involved removing HVAC equipment original to the building and upgrading HVAC service. The contractor has removed much of the old equipment and a new chiller was installed in late December. Air flow and quality will be improved and will be better managed with more control points with the new equipment. In addition, the project will enable one elevator to be tied to the emergency power system so there will always be one operable elevator in the event of a power outage/emergency.
