Judaic Studies Department receives historic windows

Now the caretaker of pieces from Binghamton’s past, the Judaic Studies Department will both preserve and display windowpanes from Temple Beth El.

“In addition to being historical artifacts, the stained glass windows were, to a certain extent, central parts of worship in Binghamton,” said Randy Friedman, Binghamton University associate professor of Judaic studies and comparative literature. “The building itself in Judaism is never critical to the act of worship, but we know that there were people in the synagogue looking at these windows and being inspired by them.”

The stained glass windows were part of Temple Beth El in Endicott, N.Y., and were created when the temple was constructed in 1949, said Niesen Luks, a past officer of the temple. Luks played a key role in saving the windows after a group of community members decided they should be saved after learning the temple would be sold.
