Student kudos

Decker School of Nursing

Six Decker School of Nursing (DSON) graduate faculty and students presented at the American Public Health Association meeting in Denver, Colo. All presentations addressed methodologies to improve healthcare outcomes in rural and vulnerable populations. Additionally, DSON held the first Inaugural Preceptor Appreciation Day for over 70 advanced practice clinical preceptors from our regional area.

Carrie Rewakowski, a DSON PhD student, received an internship at the ANA Center for Ethics and Human Rights Professional Issue Panel. She will oversee panel communications during this four- to six-month internship.
Tak Yan, a DSON PhD student currently on leave for military training, was recently promoted to Captain in the U.S. Army.

Graduate School of Education

Amy Hysick, who earned her teaching certificate at Binghamton University’s Graduate School of Education, has been recognized as the New York State Teacher of the Year for 2017. She teachers biology at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science

Alana MacDonald, a biomedical engineering student, has been awarded the Undergraduate Award to Support Reacher and Creative Work.
Biomedical engineering senior Stephen Fischer has been selected to receive a Council Foundation Award.

Nicole Martucci, a biomedical engineering student, has been awarded honorable mention for the Provost’s Award of Excellence in Undergraduate Research.

A recent feature article in Binghamton University Magazine focused on biomedical engineering PhD student Kyle Reeser’s work building a 3-D bioprinter he calls the TissueBot.

Industrial and systems engineering doctoral students Nasser Sharareh and Hamed Kianmehr were selected to participate in the 2016 Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) Doctoral Student Colloquium.

Industrial and systems engineering doctoral student Nasim Nezamoddini was accepted to the 2016 Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) Women in Operations Research/Management Sciences (WORMS) Doctoral Colloquium.

Industrial and systems engineering doctoral student Mohammad Bataineh and undergraduate student Courtney Edwards received best paper awards at the Fifth Annual World Conference of the Society for Industrial and Systems Engineering (SISE).

Systems science doctoral student Famaz Zamani Esfahlani received third place for best poster at the 2016 Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) 2016.

Harpur College of Arts and Sciences

Mohammed Genanu, a graduate student in physics, was awarded Best Student Paper at the STMA (Surface Mount Technology Association) International 2016, for his paper titled “Microstructure and Performance of Micro Cu Pillars Assemblies.”

College of Community and Public Affairs

Thomas Mastro ’16, a dual master’s degree student in public administration and student affairs administration, represented Binghamton University in the 2016 SUNYCON Fellow Class. The group of SUNY students were chosen for their interest in innovation in higher education.

Emily Tier ’11, MPA-MSW ’16, received the 2016 Student of the Year award from the National Association of Social Workers New York State Chapter (NASW-NYS). The chapter highlighted Tier’s dedication, hardworking attitude and compassion for others. During her time as a student, Tier worked as a graduate assistant for the Department of Social Work, supporting its research initiatives, resource development and marketing/recruitment efforts.

Michelle Benedett, a second-year MSW student, was elected to the NASW-NYS Chapter Board of Directors as the MSW student representative for the state. She will serve a one-year term.
