On target for enrollment growth/faculty hires

Binghamton University included plans to increase enrollment by 2,000 students by 2017 in its NYSUNY 2020 proposal, with accompanying hiring of faculty to lower the studen-to-faculty ratio. Research and support staff will also be hired.

Beyond the numbers, the University is discussing what hires are needed to fuel research. We’ve planned and executed the first year of our enrollment growth (an additional 400 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students) without affecting the quality of our student profile, and 43 widely distributed faculty hires have been made for the 2012-2013 academic year with a view to bringing resources onto campus before the students arrive. We’ve been hiring faculty at approximately twice the rate of student growth to lower our student-to-faculty ratio from 21:1 to 19:1, and it’s being properly coordinated according to plan.
