  • Support for Faculty Parents and Caregivers

Support for Faculty Parents and Caregivers

Harpur College aims to provide support for faculty parents and caregivers, who face special challenges in pursuing their teaching and intellectual work.

To assure that they can balance their professional responsibilities with the demands placed on them by changes in their family life, the campus offers a program that allows tenure-track faculty to request an adjustment of work responsibilities during the semester of a birth or adoption or during the semester following a birth or adoption (Parental Leave General Guidelines). The decision regarding the semester in which the adjustment will take place will be made in discussion between the faculty member and the dean, in consultation with the department chair, and will take into account the needs of the faculty member, the department, and the college. During this period, the faculty member may have their professional obligation allocated exclusively to research and service.

Upon the faculty member’s request, the tenure clock will be stopped for up to one year following the birth or adoption of a child or foster placement. This form should be submitted to the dean’s office, which will forward it to HR for processing.

Binghamton University also participates in the New York State Paid Family Leave Program, which provides eligible employees with paid time off to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child, to care for a family member with a serious health condition, or to assist loved ones when a spouse, domestic partner, child or parent is deployed abroad on active military service.

Harpur College reserves a limited number of places in the Campus Pre-School  for its faculty and staff. Newly appointed faculty members are provided first access to these slots, as they become available.

Questions about these leave policies may be directed to Associate Dean Pam Smart or Assistant Director of Human Resources, Vicki Metritikas. To express interest in the spots that Harpur has reserved at the Campus Pre-School, contact Pam Smart.
