Construction update

A number of projects to spruce up campus in anticipation for Commencement were completed in May. With the long, cold winter and spring, it was an especially challenging time, but crews were able to accomplish a number of improvements including patching numerous pot holes throughout campus; repairing lawn areas damaged by snow removal; painting new lines on campus roadways, cross walks and parking lots; and planting hundreds of flowers.

Summer projects are well underway, including one adjacent to the main entrance drive.

Campus Recreation synthetic turf field

The east fields along Center Drive are under construction for installation of a multi-purpose synthetic turf field. The project will allow for extended use of the area for intramurals and club sports. Security fencing, lighting and an equipment storage building are included in the project. Work will be complete in August.

Nature Preserve pavilion

Work is complete on a pavilion that overlooks the Binghamton University Nature Preserve. The 20- by 12-foot covered deck has room for two picnic tables and affords a sweeping view of the Nature Preserve.

Old O’Connor Johnson renovations

Only landscaping work remains to complete this project. In recent weeks, furniture deliveries took place for Old O’Connor where Division of Advancement offices, including alumni functions, are located, along with the University Counseling Center. Renovations to Old Johnson were completed in late 2014.

Old Champlain renovations

Basic renovation of all interior spaces along with a new elevator has been completed. Design work for an addition and other minor building modifications is underway. Construction of a 2,000-square-foot addition is scheduled to begin in February 2016. Old Champlain will house Harpur Academic Advising, a globalization center and a Korean center.

Smart Energy Research and Development Facility

Phase 1 work which involves all the steel and concrete construction will be complete at the end of June. The steel is all in and the concrete foundation and decks are poured. Drainage work has taken place along with back-filling and placement of granite stair treads. Phase 2 of the project will entail construction of the shell and fit out, or overall completion of the facility. Bids for that phase will be opened in mid-June with work to follow. The project remains on schedule, with occupancy expected in summer 2017.

Lecture Hall Student Wing renovations

New window sills are being installed on the third floor of the Lecture Hall Student Wing. Restroom walls are framed and tiling will be underway soon. The third floor will be ready for classes for the fall semester. New window installations are taking place in the connecting link and on the east side of the building. On the second floor, wall framing is underway along with mechanical, electrical and plumbing work. Similar mechanical, electrical and plumbing work is progressing in the basement. Abatement is underway on the first floor. Renovations to the basement, first and second floors will be complete in spring 2016.
