Binghamton’s LGBTQ Center director launches Pride Index

In 2007, the national nonprofit Campus Pride developed the Campus Pride Index, a benchmarking tool offered to colleges and universities to assess their efforts at creating LGBTQ-friendly campuses. Binghamton’s new LBGTQ Center director has launched the Pride Index on campus. Campuses can score up to five stars and have their scores published in the national online database that allows prospective students and families to search for campuses who have “come out” in support of LGBTQ student success.

Binghamton University’s assessment has 10 assessment areas including residence life, health and counseling services, human resources and personnel policies, and campus security, and will be led over the summer by Kelly Clark, director of the new LGBTQ Center in the Division of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, will call on different campus departments over the summer to answer questions and supply evidence to support the assessment. “While it will be great to be listed in the database alongside other institutions like Cornell University, more importantly, the index will provide us with an important benchmark from which to assess the success of the Center’s efforts over the next few years,” Clark said.
