Inaugural Rainbow Welcome Program

During Welcome Week, the new LGBTQ Center hosted 72 first-year students at its Rainbow Welcome orientation program for LGBTQ students. This event was the first of its kind at Binghamton University. The new center is fully staffed with students moving into the fall semester and has a full line-up of programming scheduled, including collaborations with Alumni Relations, the Fleishman Center, the Counseling Center and the Office of International Programs.

Multicultural Resource Center

More than 600 attended the inaugural Multicultural Extravaganza that was held in the Anderson Center Friday, Aug. 26. The program featured world-renowned author and poet MK Asante, more than 20 cultural student group presentations and performances. This program is designed to introduce incoming freshman students of color to student organizations and services available on the campus.

Becky Lee has been hired as the MRC translation and interpretation coordinator. She comes to us from Governor’s State University in Illinois, where she served as an ESL Instructor. She holds a mastet’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Southern Illinois University. She will develop translation and interpretation opportunities for our students and manage our faculty and staff volunteers who provide services for students in crisis

The MRC launched Conscious Conversations this summer in collaboration with the new Student Conflict and Dispute Management Program which is housed in the Dean of Students Office. This ongoing program is designed to assist students in their efforts to have difficult conversations on a variety of topics important to them.

UDiversity Educational Institute

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), in conjunction with the Dean of Students Office and SUNY Broome’s Taskforce on Diversity and Inclusion, will develop a deliberations guide designed to assist students, faculty and staff in managing difficult conversation around race. DEI conducted a brief survey this summer to ascertain themes that will inform the guide. As a research University, Binghamton University is committed to using research tools to help us better understand and respond effectively to concerns relevant to University constituents and the greater community. The current survey is another step in assisting Binghamton University regarding issues learned from the initial Campus Climate Survey in 2014.
