Debate Team excels at nationals

The Cross-Examination Debate Association’s (CEDA) National tournament took place in March, and the Binghamton University Debate Team earned a number of achievements:
• Finished as the sixth-best overall debate program in the nation and third-best public debate program in the nation.
• Saw Jason Smith and TJ Buttgereit named to CEDA’s All-American Team. The pair made it into the national tournament’s Sweet 16, where they lost on a 3-2 decision to the team that went on to win nationals. This is the first time since 2012 that Binghamton has been in the Sweet 16 of CEDA Nationals. Smith, a senior engineering student, has been on the team for four years.
• Saw freshmen Roberto Montero and Jia Pan make it to the round of 32, showing excellent promise for growth in the future.
•    Saw freshmen Amy Williamson and Maddison Derksema, both in their first year of debate ever and first time competing at a varsity tournament, finish 2-6 in preliminary rounds, showing bright promise.
