Construction update

Smart Energy Building

Departments have begun moving into the Smart Energy Building at the Innovative Technologies Complex. The chemistry and physics departments will occupy space over the summer. Interior work is complete and site work continues with most of that effort due to wrap up in mid-July. Laboratories and faculty offices are included in the project, which aims to provide space for faculty and industry scientists and engineers to work side by side to create new energy technologies and maintain and expand the regional workforce.

Features include micro turbines on mechanical systems, a fuel cell to produce electricity at a reduced cost to heat and cool the building, photovoltaic panels on the roof to produce electricity, hydronic radiant heating in the floor, controlled LED lighting, individual space monitoring of chemicals to reduce air flows and energy use and water-cooled equipment wherever possible to conserve energy.

School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Brick and windows are being installed on the north and west sides of the School of Pharmacy. This work will continue through the summer months and into early fall. Cooling towers and chillers and other large pieces of mechanical equipment have arrived and are being set in place. Drywall is being installed on most floors and mechanical rough-ins are underway, along with metal framing. Site and utility work have also been progressing, with development of a north parking lot and preparation for new sidewalks. Major construction is set to be complete in a little under a year, with occupancy in fall 2018.

48 Corliss Ave., Johnson City

Across the street from the School of Pharmacy, asbestos removal and demolition is underway at 48 Corliss Ave. This building will become home to the Decker School of Nursing. Abatement and demo are scheduled to be complete by the end of the summer. The floor plan is finalized and details of the building’s HVAC and electrical systems are being developed as design work wraps up.

Science 4 renovation

Renovations to the east side of Science 4 are on schedule. Scaffolding can be seen on the east side of the building as and new elevator tower is constructed. Abatement on the basement and first floor is complete and demolition is underway on both floors. Abatement has begun on the third floor. New offices and laboratories will be constructed for the Psychology Department. There will also be a new elevator and building entrance as a result of the project. The building exterior will be re-clad. Work will end in summer 2018.

Seneca Hall renovation

This project is similar to the Cayuga Hall renovation that took place last year. It is a critical maintenance project that will include asbestos abatement, rehabilitation and new layout for bathrooms and preventive maintenance of existing plumbing, electrical and mechanical infrastructure. New lighting will be installed in bedrooms. The
elevator will be modernized. A new roof is also part of the project which will begin in late summer and be complete in summer 2018.

A number of projects also got underway immediately following Commencement. Generally, the campus tries to schedule projects in high-traffic areas during the summer when fewer people are on campus.

University Union projects

A small addition is being added for a Dunkin’ Donuts on the east side of the University Union. Work is also underway in the Binghamton University Bookstore, which will have a new look when students return.

Dickinson Community storm water line repairs

Repairs to sections of storm line in the Dickinson Community are in progress. The project will repair two sections of line; a 120-foot section between O’Connor and Johnson halls and a 30-foot section near Rafuse and Digman. Work will be finished by the time students return.

Pedestrian/circulation improvements at West Gym

The drive going to the Events Center parking lots will be re-located to eliminate pedestrian/vehicle conflicts in front of the West Gym. The bus pulloff in front of the West Gym will be moved to avoid conflicts with the new crosswalk. A new sidewalk that aligns with the West Gym entrance will be constructed. The project is not bid yet, but the plan is to complete work by the time students return in August.

Bearcat Boulevard paving

Bearcat Boulevard in front of the Events Center will be paved this summer. This section of road runs from the West Gym to Bunn Hill Access Road. The timing will be coordinated with other projects taking place in the area.

Sidewalk improvements in various areas

Sidewalk improvements will take place in a number of areas including the walkway between Academic A and B, a section of the Peace Quad walkway across from the Couper Administration Building, a walkway in the Memorial Courtyard, a section of walkway between Old Rafuse and Old O’Connor halls and a walkway adjacent to Cleveland Hall in Hinman College.

Fine Arts air handler replacement project

Work to replace air handlers in the Fine Arts Building is underway. Asbestos abatement has taken place and demolition of equipment in mechanical rooms has begun. This work will be fairly disruptive to surrounding areas. This critical maintenance project will replace some original equipment serving the south side of Fine Arts. Air flow and quality will be improved on the first, second and third floors and will be bettered managed with more control points. The project will be complete late August 2017.

Flooring replacements are also taking place in various corridors of the Fine Arts building this summer.

Hinman College site lighting project/new curbs/flooring

Exterior lighting throughout Hinman College will be replaced with improved, more energy-efficient lighting. There will be no walkway lighting through Friday, June 30. Exterior building lights will provide minimal exterior lighting during this time. New curbs will also be installed at Hinman College. Roosevelt and Smith halls will get new flooring in the corridors and the basement lounge. RD apartments throughout Hinman will also get new flooring. These projects will be complete by the fall semester.

West Gym pool repairs

Pool filters are being replaced and upgrades are being made to mechanical systems related to pool function. Repairs will also be made to the ceramic tile in the pool and area lighting will be upgraded to energy efficient LEDs. Underwater lighting will also be upgraded.
