Baseball clinches second straight America East regular season title

Sophomore pitcher Nick Gallagher tied a school record with his eighth win of the season in the opener and junior Jacob Wloczewski followed with a 1-hit shutout in the nightcap as Binghamton baseball (29-11, 14-4 America East) clinched another America East regular season title with a sweep of Hartford Friday afternoon at the Baseball Complex. The Bearcats won 4-1 and 1-0 to secure the program’s second straight conference title and the sixth in the last 11 years. Binghamton, reigning postseason champions as well, will now carry the No. 1 seed into the America East tournament, which begins Wednesday in Lowell, Mass.

In the opener, Gallagher (W, 8-2) scattered five hits and one run in 6.0 innings and BU snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth inning. The Bearcats then added an insurance run in the eighth to clinch the title. Gallagher struck out five and notched his eighth win of the spring, tying two others for most wins in a season.

Junior catcher Jason Agresti hit his team-high 13th double of the year and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. His two-out, two-strike drive to the base of the wall in center field gave BU a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After Hartford tied it with two singles and a sacrifice in the second, BU took the lead for good in the fourth. Agresti led off with a single and freshman second baseman Justin Drpich was hit by pitch. Junior DH Pat Britt then stroked an RBI single on a 1-2 pitch to plate Agresti and give BU a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Greg Satriale delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-1.

In the eighth inning, junior center fielder CJ Krowiak led off with a single and moved to third on a single by senior first baseman Eddie Posavec. Sophomore third baseman Justin Yurchak then drilled a long sacrifice fly to dead center, scoring Krowiak easily with the final run of the game.  Posavec went 2-for-4 in his first game at first base after classmate Brendan Skidmore went down with an injury. He has now started in five different positions as a Bearcat (LF, RF, C, DH, 1B).

Baseball rookie lands top national honor

Binghamton second baseman Justin Drpich earned national honors on Wednesday when he was selected as a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American after an outstanding rookie season. Drpich was one of 12 freshmen second basemen chosen by the national publication.

He hit .330 with 32 hits and 27 RBI in 26 games this spring. Drpich’s more-than-one-RBI-per-game average put him in elite company (top 60 in nation). He particularly feasted on America East pitching, hitting a team-high .404 with four home runs. In the field, he didn’t make an error in 82 chances during the regular season and wound up with a .980 fielding percentage.

Among his 10 multi-hit games was a 3-for-5, 5 RBI showing against St. Bonaventure on May 2. In that game, Drpich delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give BU a dramatic 10-6 win.

In addition to his work at second (and four games at DH), Drpich showcased his arm on the pitching mound. He made four relief appearances in April before teammate injuries forced him to be the everyday starter at second. In his last pitching appearance against Cornell on April 26, Drpich struck out two in a scoreless inning of work.

He becomes the fifth BU Freshman All-American in program history, joining Henry Dunn (2007), Dave Ciocchi (2009), Michael Thompson (2010) and Bill Bereszniewicz (2011).

Baseball third baseman taken by White Sox in MLB Draft

Binghamton junior third baseman Justin Yurchak was selected in the 12th round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday afternoon. He becomes the sixth Bearcat to be taken in the last six years. He also becomes highest BU position player taken in 27 years.

“I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has helped me along the way,” Yurchak said. “I most certainly would not be in this situation without so many people. It has been a long journey and I look forwarded to continuing my baseball career.”

After transferring from Wake Forest in 2016, Yurchak ranked 22nd in the country in on-base percentage this spring (.474), thanks in part to drawing 41 walks (7th in nation). He hit .333 from the No. 3 spot in the order during the regular season and was a first team America East all-conference selection and second team All-ECAC pick. He started 2017 with an incredible stretch where he recorded two or more hits in nine straight games. Yurchak also will likely be on the ABCA All-Northeast Region team when that team is announced later in the week.

Softball repeats as America East regular season champions

For the second consecutive season, Binghamton (21-23, 11-4 AE) has captured the America East regular-season softball championship. Despite dropping a 2-1, 4-1 doubleheader at Stony Brook (16-27, 9-7 AE) in their final regular-season games on Saturday, the Bearcats are the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, which will be held Wednesday-Saturday.

This marks the third time in five years that the Bearcats will host the America East Tournament. In 2013, Albany nipped Binghamton for first place in the regular-season but deferred the hosting role. Last year, the Bearcats accepted the host role as the No. 1 seed.

In addition, this is also the third straight year that Binghamton has won a conference championship of some sort. The Bearcats won the tournament title in 2013 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

As the No. 1 seed, Binghamton will receive a first-round bye in the America East Tournament and will face the winner of the first-round game between No. 4 Albany and No. 5 UMBC on Thursday at 11 a.m.

Maine, as the No. 2 seed, also earned a first-round bye. The Black Bears will meet the winner of Wednesday’s first-round game between No. 3 Stony Brook and No, 6 Hartford on Thursday at 1:30.

Softball leads league with seven all-conference selections

The Binghamton softball team, which recently captured its second straight America East title, also came away as the leader at the All-Conference Awards Banquet on Tuesday night.

The Bearcats were tops among all America East teams with seven all-conference picks, including a conference-best four first-team selections. In addition, Binghamton tied UMass Lowell with three All-Rookie selections and also landed a pair of All-Academic picks. All total, nine Bearcat players earned at least one accolade.

“Congratulations to all of our award winners,” head coach Michelle Johnston said. “The recognition shows all their hard work they put in on a daily basis. We know these individual awards could not be accomplished without the effort of their teammates and the effort they all give us to reach our goals”

Junior outfielder Jessica Rutherford, junior third baseman Kate Richard and junior second baseman Stephanie Bielec were all repeat selections on the first team. They were joined by senior designated player Gabby Bracchi, who earned her first career all-conference honor. Bracchi was also named to the All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

The Binghamton men’s lacrosse team (10-3, 3-2 AE) fell to No. 1 Syracuse (11-1, 4-0 AE), 9-8, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. Tom Moore led all scorers with five goals. His fifth goal tied the Binghamton record for goals in a season (39) set by Matt Springer in 2014.

“I thought we came out and fought hard today,” said Head Coach Kevin McKeown. “The result wasn’t what we had hoped, but we were able to grow from today’s game. Syracuse is a very good team and we were able to hang with them. That shows a lot about where we are at right now as a team.”
