Track standout Haley perseveres amid hardship

By all accounts, Sarah Haley has had an outstanding four years at Binghamton. She is a two-time America East champion in the pole vault and has consistently made the America East Academic Honor Roll. On top of that, Haley has held a pair of part-time jobs – one at the East Gym on campus and the other as a waitress at nearby Park Diner.

Four years ago, Haley arrived on campus from Dover, a small town in Dutchess County, New York. Following graduation, she will begin her first full-time job at an accounting firm on Park Avenue in New York City.

But perhaps Haley’s biggest accomplishment came as a result of the most difficult experience of her life. On March 31, 2016, she and her teammates were on their way to a track meet at William & Mary. They were at a rest stop in Richmond when a gunman opened fire, killing a state trooper and injuring two others. One of the wounded people was Haley. The event made national news and thrust Haley into the media spotlight.

Women’s soccer player Shankman relishes NCAA Forum experience

“I can’t, I have soccer.”

I do not think I could count the number of times that phrase has come out of my mouth. Since the time I started playing competitively, those five words have been a staple in my rhetoric, as the game of soccer has dominated my life. For some, continually having to “miss out” on birthday parties, concerts, or vacations, because of a sport would seem like a burden. But for me, it never was. I love the game and so every time I had the opportunity to lace up my cleats I was one happy individual.
