OASAS College Environmental Prevention Grant and newly appointed college prevention coordinator

In the spring of 2017, Binghamton University was one of 20 SUNY and CUNY colleges in 17 counties across New York to be awarded grant funding by the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) to assist in the prevention and reduction of underage drinking and drug use. Binghamton’s award ($125,000 annually for five years) is being used to develop programs expected to decrease problems related to alcohol and drug use such as academic difficulties, injuries, assaults and overdoses.

The funding supports the development of a campus community coalition and foster community partnerships to help strengthen local prevention efforts and will target traditionally aged college students.

Other objectives include:
• Reducing alcohol and drug access and availability on campus and in the surrounding community;
• Changing attitudes and norms that support college underage drinking and drug use, including prescription drug misuse; and
• Providing Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) services to college students as appropriate.

The grant will be managed through a campus prevention coordinator, a new position funded through the grant. Erin Monroe has been hired into that position and is part of the Health Promotion and Prevention Services team.
