Binghamton selected to host America East Softball Championship

The America East Conference has awarded its 2018 softball tournament to Binghamton University. The four-day event, which starts May 9, returns to the Bearcats Sports Complex for the third consecutive year.

This marks the first time in over a decade that the conference tournament site was determined in advance. The past two years, Binghamton was the host school by virtue of its winning the America East regular-season title.

“We are excited to find out we will be hosting the America East Championship again this year,” head coach Michelle Johnston said. “Our facilities and events staff, as well as all our support staff at Binghamton, have done a fantastic job hosting the tournament the last two years and making this a great experience for the student athletes. We feel lucky to have such amazing facilities and the new field surface will allow us to host an even better tournament this year.”

Since 2013, Binghamton has been the host site for the America East championships three times. In 2013, the Bearcats finished second in the regular-season standings but hosted the tournament when top-seeded Albany deferred.

Binghamton has an all-time record of 44-25 at the Bearcats Sports Complex since the facility opened on March 30, 2013. With 360 seats, there have been five sellouts since the Bearcats Sports Complex opened, including a facility-record 536 fans for Binghamton’s Senior Day game against Maine on April 30, 2017.

On the field, Binghamton is in the midst of a three-year championship run. The Bearcats won the 2015 conference title in addition to capturing the conference’s past two regular-season crowns.

Picked to finish first in the America East preseason poll, Binghamton launched its 2018 season at the Lamar Cardinal Classic.
