Student-athletes register lofty 3.21 GPA in fall semester

Binghamton student-athletes continued their longstanding academic prowess in the fall semester with another another lofty set of achievements. The group of 428 individuals achieved a 3.21 grade-point average - the second-highest semester mark in program history.

It was the 11th straight semester that the group surpassed a 3.10 GPA and the 3.21 figure is only surpassed by the 3.23 average posted in spring 2016.

An incredible 70 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher GPA and 51 percent (217 individuals) were at 3.3 or higher. More than one-third of the group (37 percent) held down a 3.5 or higher.

The women’s tennis team notched a department-best 3.63 average to win the Academic Cup, given to the team with the highest grade-point average. Eighteen Binghamton University teams held a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Individually, 29 student-athletes representing 14 different teams had a perfect 4.0 in the fall.

Binghamton student-athletes have reached the 3.0 plateau 24 consecutive semesters.

Sixty-nine student-athletes make America East Honor Roll

The America East Conference has released its 2017 Fall Academic Honor Roll, which includes the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball as well as men’s and women’s cross country. Binghamton had 69 of its student-athletes from those teams make the list. This accounts for 71 percent of all eligible student athletes from those programs.

In order to be named to the Fall America East Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have attained at least 3.0 for the semester. Those student-athletes who attained at least a 3.5 GPA were also named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll. There were 33 Binghamton student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

All five Binghamton fall programs had at least 60 percent of its student-athletes who attained at least a 3.0 GPA. The women’s cross country team led the way with 92 percent of its squad making that mark.

Binghamton also released the Fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, which includes all of its sports. Those student-athletes who attained at least a 3.3 GPA for the fall semester made the list. Of Binghamton’s 428 student athletes, 50.2 percent were selected (215 total).

Earlier in the month, the Binghamton Athletic Department announced that the overall GPA of all the student-athletes for the fall semester was a 3.21.
