UDiversity Educational Institute

During this quarter, the Educational Institute conducted 19 trainings (five workshops for faculty/staff, 13 for students and one for community members) with a total of 381 participants.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) submitted a proposal that was accepted for the 27th annual SUNY Conference on Instruction & Technology (CIT), sponsored by SUNY FACT2 (Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching and Technology). The presentation will focus on DEI’s collaboration with the CLT to provide an online course for faculty about inclusive pedagogy in the classroom.

DEI participated in a program titled “Diving into Diversity” that was convened by the Dickinson Community and featured faculty, staff and student speakers.

UDiversity continued its efforts to expand partnerships by working with EAP and Human Resources, Harpur Edge, the Binghamton University chapter of the NAACP and the Professional Staff Senate. UDiversity co-facilitated a workshop on “Generations in the Workplace” with EAP and human resources. This particular training was part of the Binghamton University Dining Services by Sodexo winter training session for its managers. As part of implementing the racial justice deliberation program, UDiversity conducted a presentation for Harpur Edge to offer opportunities for Harpur students to understand ways to create dialogue around racial identity and experiences on campus. Also as part of the Racial Justice Deliberation program, trainings on “Racial Justice Deliberation Moderating” were provided for campus and community members.
UDiversity also supported the Binghamton University chapter of the NAACP’s inaugural week of activities during Black History Month. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion provided support for the Binghamton University NAACP chapter in its participation in the #NationalWalkOut Day addressing gun violence in the U.S. As partners with the Broome-Tioga NAACP, UDiversity also convened a workshop as part of its “Youth Employment Preparation Program” (YEPP) for Broome County youth. YEPP is a collaboration between the Broome-Tioga NAACP; Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and the ATTAIN Center. The goal of YEPP is to provide pathways to ensuring economic stability of youth by increasing the percentage of city of Binghamton and Broome County youth, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds (minority, low-income) between the ages of 14-24, to obtain gainful employment opportunities within Broome and Tioga counties in the Southern Tier of New York state.
In addition, DEI is currently working with the Professional Staff Senate to discuss ways to expand PSS’s work on diversity within the organization.

DEI has seen a sharp increase in requests for workshops around the recruitment process and our role in managing the search process and working collaboratively with Human Resources.
