Binghamton Campus Community Coalition

Binghamton University was awarded the College Environmental Prevention Program grant through New York state’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) in fall 2016. The goal of the grant is to prevent and reduce underage alcohol consumption and other drug (AOD) use including prescription drug misuse by college students.

In September 2017, Erin Monroe, college prevention coordinator, joined the Binghamton University staff to work toward:
    • Reducing alcohol and drug access on the campus and in the surrounding community
    • Reducing availability of alcohol and drugs to the targeted college student population
    • Changing attitudes and norms that support college underage drinking and drug use including prescription drug misuse
    • Providing Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) services to college students as appropriate.

To assist with the fulfillment of the grant and campus initiatives surrounding alcohol and other drug use, the Binghamton Campus Community Coalition: A Partnership to Reduce Underage Drinking and Substance Use (BCCC) was formed. Members of BCCC include representatives from Student Conduct, Athletics, University Police, counseling, the Binghamton Mayor’s Office, Binghamton City Police, Broome County Health Department and business owners. BCCC had its first formal meeting in January, and will continue to meet monthly. The BCCC members will work together to identify environmental prevention strategies based on campus needs, as well as to foster additional partnerships between the campus and the community to address underage drinking. To date, the group is engaging in a comprehensive needs assessment that included an alcohol and other drug survey completed last fall.
