Disability as diversity

Disability as diversity

The first “Disability is Diversity” Event was held at Binghamton University Wednesday, April 11!  Held in the Mandela Room, the event was a tremendous success. Over 350 people attended (students and staff) brightly colored T-shirts with the Disability is Diversity logo could be seen everywhere on campus that day.

While diversity is a large part of the conversation on Binghamton’s campus, we saw the need to bring disability into the diversity conversation. Alison Lin, a senior at Binghamton and a Residential Life RA, rallied support from across campus. Services for Students with Disabilities and Late Nite co-sponsored the event, with participation and sponsorship from the Multicultural Resource Center, Residential Life, Student Association, Active Minds, Muckles Inc., Gamma Sigma Zeta, M-Hope and the vice president for multicultural affairs.

The Mandela Room came alive with a variety of interactive tables where attendees engaged in authentic experiences as differently abled individuals. What is it like to enter a classroom, participate in group work or meet people for the first time when you have social anxiety? What does the world look like if you are visually or hearing impaired? How does assistive technology remove barriers for individuals with learning or physical disabilities?

People also learned more about the services available throughout campus to support students. Attendees left the Mandela Room with a much deeper appreciation of the importance of accessibility, the need to add disability to the diversity conversation and a greater awareness of the barriers individuals with disabilities face on a daily basis.
