Dr. Michael Leonard, MD, retiring as medical director

Dr. Michael Leonard, MD, is being recognized for an incredible 30-plus year career at Binghamton University. He joined the campus in 1982 as a college physician and became the medical director of University Health Services in 1991. Leonard will retire from University service in August.

His leadership has been instrumental in providing our students the highest quality of healthcare on campus. During his tenure, Leonard has participated as a “sentinel physician” in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Sentinel Network for Influenza Surveillance; and as a UHS family practice residency coordinator and preceptor. He has also served and contributed as a member of the Student Health Advisory Council Board of Directors, Eating Awareness Committee and Center for Work Quality. Leonard provided direct oversight to the department’s Quality Assurance Committee, and is a member of the Administrative and Coordination of Care teams.

Outside of the University, Leonard has served as the president and committee member to the SUNY Health Service’s Council, American College Health Association and the New York State College Health Association.

His notable achievements include development of the family practice residency, implementation of the electronic medical record and Skype access systems, facility renovation and expansion, and establishment of accreditation status through the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Leonard continuously stays abreast of the status of infectious diseases via the CDC and World Health Organization and plays a key role in planning for the Decker Student Health Services Center as well as for the University at large as evidenced by his expertise in leading the campus through preparations to deal with SARS, H1N1, Ebola and Zika viruses.
