Media and public relations activities
It was a busy summer for national news hits with some of our most successful outreach to date. Research from Binghamton Psychology Professor Matthew Johnson was the featured cover story for Parade magazine, the most widely read magazine in the U.S., with a readership of 55 million. In addition, the School of Management’s Seth Spain was interviewed live on the set of CBS This Morning and was also featured in the Wall Street Journal.

Top news releases distributed locally and via national newswires in the third quarter of 2014 included faculty focused as well as general campus stories. Some of those that garnered high levels of media interest and resulted in numerous media “hits” were:
• “Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches Construction of the new Southern Tier High Technology Incubator,” featured a major construction project spearheaded by Binghamton University and the Binghamton University Foundation. President Harvey Stenger joined state and federal representatives as well as numerous community leaders to watch as an excavator broke ground on the $19M Southern Tier High Technology Incubator (STHTI) project.
• “Binghamton University Professor: Obama’s Legacy at Stake in Campaign Against ISIS,” featured Ricardo René Larémont, professor of political science and sociology, and nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.
• “Binghamton University to Build a New $60 Million School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,” featured President Harvey Stenger, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state and federal representatives, to announce the $60 million school that will be constructed on a 5.49-acre parcel in Johnson City.
• The article, “Humans of New York: An Illustration of How IT is Affecting Leadership,” featured School of Management Professor Surinder Kahai for his argument that Humans of New York (HONY) and its author Brandon Stanton illustrate how technology has enabled the emergence of unappointed informal leaders who have a powerful influence over others.
• “Algorithms Reveal Forecasting Power of Tweets,” featured Binghamton University and researchers at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), a division of Xerox Research, who used 500 million tweets to develop algorithms that not only paint a picture of everyday human dynamics, but can predict an individual’s behavior hours in advance.
• “The Ethics of Giving: Why Not all Charity is Good Charity,” featured David Campbell, associate professor of public administration, who teaches about philanthropy.
• “Binghamton University Professor: Expect More Violence From ISIS,” featured Ricardo René Larémont, professor of political science and sociology and nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, discussing the rising threat of ISIS.
• “$8.2 Million Grant to Support Binghamton University’s Alcohol Research Efforts,” featured Linda Spear, distinguished professor of psychology and scientific director of the Development Exposure Alcohol Research Center (DEARC), a research center led by Binghamton University.
• “Binghamton University Breaks Ground for New Smart Energy Facility,” featured Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger, who was joined by Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy and other state and local officials at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new $70M, 114,000-square-foot building at the Innovative Technologies Complex, 85 Murray Hill Road, Vestal.
• “Depression is a Disease and It Can Be Deadly,” featured Brandon Gibb, professor of psychology and director of clinical training at Binghamton University.
• “Binghamton University awarded grant for Battlefield Preservation Project,” featured Michael Jacobson, project director and battlefield research coordinator for PAF. The Binghamton University Public Archaeology Facility (PAF) has been awarded a $28,000, two-year grant by the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) for the Newtown and Chemung Battlefields Preservation Planning Project.
• “Bumblebees in Trouble: Commercialization Has Sickened Bumblebees Around the World. Can We Save Them?” featured Nancy Stamp, professor of biological sciences.
• “Binghamton University Dean Honored with Malone Award for Internationalization,” recognized Dean Krishnaswami “Hari” Srihari for having been named among three 2014 recipients of the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to international education at public and land-grant institutions.
In addition, during the third quarter of 2014, hometown releases were distributed announcing the achievements and accomplishments of over 3,832 students.
John Brhel officially joined the Binghamton MPR Office, providing much-needed assistance with media outreach, social media, writing and coordination of the Ask a Scientist program which re-launched in September and is currently seeking faculty writers.
Engagement on the University’s social channels spiked by executing event-driven campaigns like the Move-In-focused #HomeSweetBing, running contests, curating user-submitted content and sharing striking visual media produced by University photographer Jonathan Cohen, photographer intern Jonathan King and video producer Andrew Hatling. During the quarter, the team surpassed 10,000 followers on Twitter and 5,000 followers on Instagram, and had several record-breaking posts.
