Alumni Relations active making connections

The Alumni Association sponsored Homecoming 2014, on campus Oct. 17-19. Almost 900 alumni attended the weekend of activities, which included traditional events such as the tailgate party, men’s soccer game, basketball showcase, Black Student Union Fashion Show and Greek God. The weekend also included well-attended milestone reunions for the Classes of 1954, 1964, 2004 and 2014, the Educational Opportunity Program, Pi Lambda Phi and the Pep Band. Held annually, Homecoming enables alumni to reconnect with each other and with the University, while making new memories with their friends and families.

Also at Homecoming, the Alumni Association launched its new speaker series TIER Talks: Talks that Insipre, Educate and Resonate. An accomplished alumni and faculty panel shared perspectives on “Rethinking Success: Thriving in the Modern World.” Almost 200 people attended the session in Watters Theater to hear from Fred Luskin ’76, Associate Professor Christopher Morgan-Knapp, Associate Professor Kimberly Jaussi and Professor Matthew D. Johnson. A video of the entire TIER Talks event appears in the new “Lifelong Learning” section of the Alumni Association website, which is intended to be a portal to alumni lectures, presentations and interviews.

During the fall semester, the Alumni Association introduced a new series called BAM! Binghamton Alumni Mentoring. The concept is for one graduate to meet with a small group of students in a setting such as a restaurant or café to engage in informal networking. BAM! will take place in Binghamton during the academic year, and will be held in New York City and other large metro areas during winter and summer recesses, while students are away from campus.

To help young alumni get started in their careers, the Alumni Association added a “Career Toolkit” section to its website, intended to be a resource “by alumni, for alumni” featuring articles and a video providing advice on networking, interviewing and finding job leads. Going forward, alumni will be invited to produce and submit articles and videos for the site.
